Cori McCullough (b. 1988, Michigan, USA) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Portland, Oregon. Oil paint is their primary medium, with a background in photography and a Bachelors of Science in Filmmaking(Art Institute of California, Los Angeles 2010). Through a variety of inputs they distill experiences into singular outputs. Their work explores subconscious patterns, using color as a narrative where language falls short. Cori has shown paintings, films, and photographs in California, Michigan, and Oregon. They have received awards for painting projects through the regional arts and culture council in Portland, OR, and received best of show awards for both their documentary and short film work while in college. Their art practice is ever evolving, a balance of intuition and intention.
My artwork seeks to convey the in between areas where moments integrate from an outer reality into an inner landscape. Patterns beyond logic and reason, where reality separates into a world without language. The connections and stories brought to mind by interactions of color and form. I work from fragments of reality and imagination, which often feels as if it works through me. How a landscape made you feel, a pattern from a dream. Ideas that reach people at the same moment.
I am deeply fascinated with color and the way it conveys emotion and nudges me to new narratives. I’m interested in grey area transitions when moments, memories, and, experience come to be something that lives within us, transforming with time. I want to look beyond the surface that you start, always going a bit further in. I feel my paintings are always searching for distinct balance between movement and rest. A soft landing, a deep breath.
My oil paintings contain many layers, as if on first glance you see a moment, upon a second glance you start to see different paths appear. You could take the scenic route to nowhere, allow yourself to think of everything, or nothing at all. I hope to create a place to think, to dream, to rest. My work asks questions and seeks no answers.
